Vintage Conn Mellophone Eb 1921 -Beautiful “Sideways” design. W Case!
Key of E-flat. It even has the “LP” (Low Pitch) extension slide (see photo). LP is our modern A=440 pitch, so it is in modern tuning.
The “sideways” design - please notice how the valve casings are at a 45-degree angle to the rest of the horn. This creates a graceful beautiful look. And is hard to find! I’m sure Conn had a name for this design, but I don’t know it yet. It makes it so that when you play, it is facing more out to the side than down at the floor.
Please note! The horn has problems right now and needs work!
    - Small break/leak where mouthpiece receiver goes into leadpipe. See photo.
    - Sizeable dent just after RH pinky-ring. See Photo.
    - Patch on top of leadpipe. See Photo.
-a few very small dings and dents elsewhere.
    - silver plating is mostly gone, remains in patches. But raw brass is great for mellophones too.
    - Some slides are stuck in, but the two I tried to move (1st & 3rd valve slides) came without much effort.
-haven’t gotten the valve caps unscrewed yet, but haven’t tried very hard.
That said, the valves move up and down fine, after I put some valve oil in thru the 1st v slide.
Once this horn is repaired, it will be a gem. Conn was making incredible mellophones in the early ‘20’s, usually beautiful-sounding and very in-tune. I think it’s worth finding out with this one (I do not have the time to spend on it), and am offering it at a pretty low-risk price, considering you will most likely have a jewel after some basic repairs.
